GETTING TO KNOW MOROCCO History

Morocco is positioned on the coastal north-west shoulder of Africa, giving it easy access to Europe, the Middle East and the American continent with long coastlines bordering the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. The geography is dominated by the rugged Atlas Mountains striding from the south-west corner to the north-east, dictating the weather across the whole country. To the south the lesser Anti-Atlas Mountains shelter valleys and inner desert areas; the largest of these great mountain chains – the High Atlas – reaches to the north protecting against strong desert winds from the south while the Middle Atlas stretching to north-east border produces rich valleys and timber clad slopes. The legendary forest clad Rif Mountains run roughly in tandem with the Mediterranean coast. The varied weather patterns and amazing variety of terrain – desert, coastal, fertile plains or mountain - make Morocco a great place to holiday any time of year … there is always somewhere spectacular.

History of MOROCCO

Moroccan culture and peoples is a unique mix of Berber, European, Arab, Jewish and African found nowhere else! Due to its coveted position on the top of Africa, it has long been prized as a gateway for trade from beyond the Sahara Desert to the “New World” or Europe. The indigenous Berbers or Amazigh people have lived here for thousands of years. By the 8th Century BC the Phoenicians had established coastal bases, and in the 3rd and 2nd Centuries BC the Romans established themselves in the north until the collapse of the Roman Empire early in the 5th Century AD. It was the Arabs arriving in 788AD who brought Islam to Morocco for the first time. For several hundred years various tribal dynasties came to power then crumbled leaving an astonishing legacy of great buildings, trade and crafts; European powers held strategic ports in the mid-1700s to early 1900s. Morocco became a French protectorate in 1912 and gained full independence in 1956. Morocco has a population today of approximately 35 million. The official language is Arabic, but many speak the Berber dialects, French and an increasing number of locals speak English and Spanish. Our most important industries are tourism, agriculture and phosphate production.

OUR CULTURE (Tradition & Etiquette)

Moroccan culture is based on the family and on Islam but has long been tolerant of different customs and religions. With Arabic, Berber, Jewish, European and African communities it is an extraordinary mix of diverse nationalities and customs. Well known for welcoming visitors, our easy hospitality is rooted in the traditional custom of welcoming strangers. While a generally conservative people, views are slowly changing especially in the cities where European ideals and dress codes are accepted on the streets, in cafes etc. together with the traditional. Life is slower to change in the rural areas where conservative values are still protected and visitors are asked to respect this. Morocco is 99% Muslim, 1% Christian with a small Jewish community.
